Built for the boards nobody builds for
Tens of thousands of buildings run by volunteers with no manager, using software written for management companies or no software at all. That gap is the whole reason this exists.
The observation this started from
Between twenty and four hundred units, in Canada and the United States, there are tens of thousands of condominium corporations and homeowners' associations run entirely by volunteers. No manager, no bookkeeper, no compliance officer. A treasurer with a spreadsheet, a secretary with a shared drive, and a president answering emails at midnight.
Almost every product aimed at this world is aimed at the management company that sits above it. It assumes a professional operator, priced for a portfolio, with the board as a read only audience. Point that at five volunteers and it is unusable in both directions: too much software and too little help.
The design principle
Every accountability artefact is a byproduct of doing the work, never a separate task. The minutes come out of the meeting. The decision register comes out of deciding. The compliance evidence comes out of the notice you sent anyway. The audit trail comes out of the ledger.
Volunteers do not have a second shift for the paperwork about the work. If the paperwork is not produced by the work itself, it does not get produced.
The second principle follows from the first: the board can never edit history. A record a board can quietly change is not evidence, and evidence is the entire reason a volunteer board needs software rather than a folder.
Who we are
Board Butler is built by Shail Silver in Toronto, alongside a portfolio of operating software businesses. It is not a first attempt at shipping something; it is a first attempt at shipping something in this particular corner.
We are not going to tell you how many people work here or how much money we raised, because neither would tell you anything about whether the product computes your reserve contribution correctly.
What we will not build
We will not build a feature that makes leaving harder. Export is a button, it is complete, and there is an invariant test that fails the build if an approval step ever appears in front of it.
We will not publish anything a model wrote without a person approving it. No automatic minutes, no automatic notices, no automatic legal answers.
We will not put a financing offer in front of a board without the option of not borrowing beside it, priced.
We will not use urgency to sell. No countdowns, no expiring offers, no manufactured pressure on a volunteer who is already doing this after work.
We will not sell your data, and we will not train models on your corporation's records.
